A Cat Named Christmas

Hi Everyone,  Please share this with your animal loving contacts

In the wake of Buddy’s story,a rescue gone wrong,I would like to share the story of a cat named Christmas,a rescue done right. Gimli Humane Society is responsible for saving the life of a special little kitty they call Christmas. Christmas was in horrible shape, missing part of her rear right leg and part of her tail. After seeing a Veterinarian a decision was made to complete the amputation of the leg and the tail. I have included the videos of her rescue (part 1),and of her recovery (part 2). This rescue means a lot to myself and Lee-Anne as it was the Gimli Humane Society that came forward and offered to take Buddy for us when the W.H.S. stated that they were going to euthanize him. Sadly Buddy was not given this opportunity by the W.H.S. Lee-Anne and I have made a small donation to the Gimli Humane Society to help pay for the high cost of rescuing Christmas, and we will be donating a hamper of goodies for the other animals in their care. We felt it was the least we could do because they tried to help us save Buddy. Please have a look at the videos and visit the Gimli Humane Society website. This rescue is definitely worth sharing,it has a very happy ending. If you are in a position to donate a few dollars to help in the cost of Christmas’rescue you can donate through their website. http://www.gimlihumanesociety.org/  I will keep you all informed on our progress with the W.H.S. regarding positive changes for 2012. Thank you Gimli Humane Society for caring so much, and giving Christmas a second chance.

Help Loving the Feral Soul Inc. make their dream a reality.

Starting October 3rd vote for Loving the Feral Soul Inc.,pioneers in Manitoba’s human and ethical treatment of feral cats since 1997 to finally achieve their dream of building a protected 7 acres of natural habitat with a new facility for feral cats and rescues in rural Manitoba.

We would love to see their dream a reality beyond the help, care and love they have provided for years for feral cats and the public outreach and education they have forged in Manitoba and around the world to raise awareness of feral cats and the humane way of caring for them through colony management and TNR and how they have reached out to provide concrete evidence through years of contact with feral cats on the truths around these wonderful cats.

Please vote everyday at Help Loving the Feral Soul Inc. achieve their dream and let’s make their dream a reality.

How to Avoid your Neighbours at all Costs-From The Manitoban

Oh God,can I use this info.  I live beside the nosiest/nosiest neighbours ever.

How to avoid your neighbour at all costs

Easy steps to steer clear of all awkward social interactions

A&C - Neighbours

Do you live within the confines of the hustle and bustle of a big city? If you do then odds are you also live in close proximity to your neighbours. Whether it’s apartment buildings, condos or side-by-sides,city dwellers share a proximal intimacy with their neighbours like few others. Luckily, humans have been doing this for ages, perhaps since the dawn of time, and as such our species have crafted a time-tested,finely tuned method in which one can, with guaranteed certainty, avoid any and all social interactions with one’s next door neighbour.

If you’re one of the privileged few who have never had to live in close proximity to your neighbours, let me assure you that they are all hate-filled monster people hell-bent on world domination and total destruction. They represent your polar opposite, your antagonist, the Moriarty to your Sherlock Holmes. This may sound exaggerated or overblown but trust me,these are scientific facts — any top-tier academic institute would surely back their legitimacy without so much as a second thought.

For those of you already onboard, the following is a tactical guide,an instructional manual meant to help those in need of some serious skills in the department of neighbour avoidance and attention deflection.

The tactical advantage

The first step in proper neighbour avoidance is to become familiar with your environment. For instance,if you live in a building, does it have an easy access fire escape or perhaps ample corridors and stairways? If you live in a large apartment complex you often have the option of both stairs and an elevator. These are the types of tactical advantages you must exploit if you’re going to successfully avoid any and all awkward social interaction.

If you have to venture out within your own building to,say, collect your mail or do your laundry, try and cling to the walls as much as possible — keeping your neighbours unaware of your presence is at all times the primary goal because,as they say, prevention is always the best cure. If your building is dimly lit try to use this to your advantage. Lurking in shadows may seem silly, even counter-intuitive,but these are the types of maneuvers that will pay off in spades the next time you need to avoid helping a neighbour move a mattress in or out of the building.

The deflection

If it is absolutely impossible to conceal your presence from your neighbour it is always a good idea to keep a magazine, newspaper or some sort of periodical in hand, perhaps in your back pocket,in the event you two must cross paths. When confronted with such a situation you will want to pull the literature up to your face, opening it as wide as physically possible. Keen observers will note this is actually the same tactic used by such animals as the puffer fish or the horned lizard, which make themselves look bigger in order to avoid predatory threats.

When you are utilizing the “reading a newspaper” defence,it is best to use over-the-top,boisterous exclamations like “that is interesting,” “you don’t say,” or “sometimes truth truly is stranger than fiction!” This tactic will let your neighbour know that you are hopelessly engrossed in your reading material and, just like when confronting a sleepwalker,it would be dangerous, maybe even catastrophic in its repercussions,to wake you from your reading spell.

The fail-safe

In the event that both of these tried and true tactics fail to properly assist in neighbour avoidance, there is always one fail-safe plan that is,without doubt,100 per cent effective. Backs against the wall, faced with no other option but the unsavoury task of engaging your neighbour with small talk or chit-chat,you will be forced into your final gambit:sacrifice any semblance of social sanity. Although in all likelihood your neighbour is an awful person, they too share the same instinctual need to flee from things that are bizarre, obscene, beyond the pale.

If this last bit of advice seems at all confusing, consider the following scenario:Your neighbour approaches you and says,“Some weather we’ve been having lately, huh?”

Without hesitation, you should respond in kind with the statement:“I don’t trust tuna fish. They always say they’re bipartisan but they’re not!”

Need another example? How about this one:

You’re collecting your mail and your neighbour presents the question,“Do you know anyone who might be willing to dog-sit for a weekend?”

Immediately you begin shrieking:“I don’t have toes! I don’t have any toes! They ran away from me!” You then run off sobbing uncontrollably.

True, turning yourself into a mentally detached misanthrope may seem a steep price to pay for peace and quiet, but in these situations you must ask yourself just how much you prefer to avoid interactions with your neighbour, someone who may be,as we’ve established, the worst person in all existence.

Winnipeg Humane Society Kills More Cats in 2010

The city’s largest animal shelter saw a 22 per cent spike in the number of cats it euthanized last year after fewer Winnipeggers adopted lost or stray felines.

Winnipeg Humane Society euthanized 2,549 cats in 2010,marking a 22 per cent increase from 2009. Humane society executive director Bill McDonald blamed the increase on the rising number of homeless cats coming into the shelter, noting it’s the first time since the mid-1990s the shelter put down more cats than it was able to adopt out.

Last year,2,333 cats were adopted, down from 2,765 from the previous year.

McDonald said he doesn’t know why fewer people adopted cats, but the problem speaks to the need for a better strategy to deal with the growing number of unwanted cats. While the shelter only puts down dogs for medical reasons or if they are considered overly aggressive,McDonald said it’s a “sad reality”cats are sometimes euthanized when they run out of space. At one point last July,he said the shelter housed 455 cats, more than 190 over capacity.

“Cats are a bigger issue than dogs. Dogs are more controlled than ever before,”McDonald said. “We know there are tons of stray cats out there.”

The city is currently drafting a report on responsible pet ownership, which is expected to be completed in the coming months.

McDonald said he would be in favour of licensing cats,if the money collected from them was put toward low-cost spay and neuter programs that could put a dent in the current pet overpopulation problem. Currently, the humane society performs about 6,000 low-cost spay and neuters every year.

However,McDonald said, cities such as Calgary have adopted a more robust animal-control program, where 22 animal-control officers crack down and fine people who do not properly license their cat. In turn,he said, the money from licences is put toward a low-cost spay and neuter program that targets 10,000 animals every year.

By comparison,McDonald said,Winnipeg has three dedicated animal-control officers, who spend the bulk of some days picking up injured animals from city streets.

“Our guys are basically animal ambulance drivers,”McDonald said.

This year,McDonald said, the shelter will focus on encouraging more Winnipeggers to adopt cats in an effort to reduce the number of animals euthanized. The shelter has already hosted theme nights, where people who dress up in pajamas, for example, can adopt a cat for $25,a fraction of the regular adoption fee. In June, the shelter plans to launch Barn Buddies, which will find homes for cats that are better-suited to barns than houses, since they are good hunters and can hunt rodents.

“I maintain that if there wasn’t organizations like the Winnipeg Humane Society and other shelters, there wouldn’t be a single person driving to work in the morning without passing a dead animal on the street,”he said.
